Ralph Nader

I was looking through my hard drive for some work and found Ralph Nader. It was for my caricature class last year. He still has my vote.

Portfolio

This is the back page of my portfolio. I forgot to add fireflies before I added the blue wash. So I will be doing this one again.

Rebecca Dautremer

It's the last week of the quarter and I was in desperate need of inspiration. So I visited Rebecca Dautremer's website. She is doing Alice in Wonderland and of course in an entirely new way. I shouldn't even have to say that except that I've seen so many unoriginal interpretations of it. Like that new one in Barnes and Noble that looks like the Amy Brown/ Hot Topic version. Anyway, I was yet again blown away by her illustrations that I had to post one of them. She is with out a doubt my favorite illustrator, person (except for my husband) role model, etc. I sound lame and probably should not post blogs with so little sleep. But really, how amazing is this?

Goblin Market

This is a two page spread for my portfolio. It's of a scene from the poem Goblin Market by Christina Rossetti.

Regina Spektor

A rep from a hand made paper company came into our collage class and showed us how to make rope out of paper. So I made some and then used it in my Regina Spektor collage. The background is a wash of green acrylic, Elmers glue on top and while that's still wet I dropped watery purple acrylic on top and let the glue work its magic.

The Stranger

I did this book jacket for my portfolio class. In the original you can see more color, I probably have to boost it up in photoshop. Anyway, I was trying to translate Camus' bleak existential outlook along with his beautiful writing style. In my attempt I had minimal content and bleak tones, but a lot of different colors inside. My model is my dashing husband, Mike.

Homage to Bjork

This is an homage to Bjork I did in my collage class. It's watercolor with acetone transfers and colored pencil on the transfers.

Edmund Dulac

I was researching Goblin Market by Christina Rossetti and came across this image. I LOVE it and I want to be her and live in a world where everything is painted by Edmund Dulac. This put me in such a good mood. How did I not know about him before?

Trash Art

I thought this was a pretty neat site. I came across it while I was researching collage techniques.

Perfume

This is a first draft of a poster I designed for the movie Perfume The Story of A Murderer.

I'm not crazy about the colors and it's not as refined as I'd like. So for my next one I probably won't use ink or a coffee stain underneath. The coffee usually doesn't give me any trouble but this time it made the watercolor have a dark edge around each wash.

Mistress Masham's Repose

T. H. White's book, Mistress Masham's Repose is one of the reasons I decided to become an illustrator. I thought that if I could create stories like this through images for the rest of my life I'd be a pretty happy person. I would write stories, but seeing as I have a hard time even constructing legible sentences and my spelling is atrocious I thought I'd be better off drawing what I see rather than writing it.

So, here starts the blog of a potentially successful illustrator.
